One Piece Fans Are Very Happy About The Anime Remake

The One Piece anime is being remade for Netflix by Spy X Family and Attack on Titan's WIT Studio, and fans are very excited. The remake, titled The One Piece, was announced during manga event Jump Festa 2024 as a second (and perhaps definitive) anime adaptation of the long-running manga, starting from the original East Blue arc.

But with the current One Piece anime nearing its final arc, why does this matter? This adaptation currently has 1,088 episodes lasting around 24 minutes each, meaning watching One Piece from start to not even finish would currently take more than 435 hours.

Most long-running anime feature a lot of drawn out or filler content, where entirely new storylines are added or elements are extended to last an extra episode or two. This ensures episodes are put out consistently but takes away from the original vision and often some quality.

While this isn't explicitly confirmed, The One Piece will likely be an adaptation more authentic to the original manga, without this filler content. "They'll likely not have any filler since they'll have over 1,000 chapters ahead of them, and by the time they are near catching up the manga will probably be finished," wrote Reddit user Twoklawll. "Since the average anime episode adapts two or three chapters per episode, that would mean it would only take about 500 episodes on the high side for the new anime to reach [where it is now]."

This has made One Piece fans very happy, as those put off by the amount of filler content in the current anime will have a series to suit them, while diehard fans who've already watched every episode will have a reason to go back.

"I’ve daydreamed and wondered about a re-adapation for over a decade," said Rocko52 on Reddit. "Absolutely insane. Looking forward to it, and I guess Netflix really is wedding itself to One Piece."

"We are officially in the best timeline," added Somer. "Seasonal anime with no more filler and slow pacing plus peak animation? Sign me up," said MonoFauz. "This is the dream of those people wanting One Piece to be seasonal anime."

One Piece won't be the first anime to receive a remake like this, as Full Metal Alchemist and Dragon Ball Z have both famously received similar adaptations with Brotherhood and Kai respectively. Both were received incredibly well, with anime fans considering them the best way to experience each story.

No release date for the anime was offered, nor did Netflix share a glimpse at the animation style, word on returning voice actors, or any other details. The streaming service is all in on One Piece, with its live action adaptation proving a hit when it premiered earlier in 2023. Though the One Piece manga began in 1997 and the original anime in 1999, the series looks set to capture a whole new fanbase as both the live action adaptation and anime remake will retell the story from the very beginning.
